History of the Biewer Terrier

The history of the Biewer Terrier has been an interesting and much-discussed topic over the years. Verner and Gertrude raised Yorkshire Terriers for 20 years. On the morning of January 20th, 1984; Mrs. Biewer assisted their little "Fru Fru" in presenting them with a blue, white, and gold puppy. They named this tiny beauty, Schneeflockchen von Friedheck, and her birth marked the beginning of what is now known as the Biewer Terrier breed.

Along with their new look, came the new name of, " German Yorkshire Terrier". After much consideration, they found the "Biewer Yorkshire Terrier" to be a more fitting name and the "a la Pom Pon" was added later at the suggestion of Margot Eskens, the famous German singer. The Biewer Yorkshire Terrier a la Pom Pon made its actual debut in 1986, and quickly became a hit in Germany.

In 1989 the Biewer was accepted as its own breed with the ACH German e.V. When Verner Biewer signed the standard for the Biewer Yorkshire a’ la Pom Pon, it was that of a Yorkshire Terrier with the coloring being white-blue-gold. The standard was short and brief at the time.

The Biewer Terrier was introduced to the United States in 2003 and it has continued to grow in popularity.  It has taken the hard work of many dedicated US breeders to bring the Biewer Terrier to full AKC recognition as of January 1, 2021.
